Captain Charles N. Fox USAF Memorial Endowment

From Pipe Creek to the Philippines, Captain Charles N. Fox, United States Air Force, served his country well. A fund was created to honor Captain Fox in the Franklin County Community Foundation.

Captain Fox was born in Metamora, on Pipe Creek. He attended Metamora School and graduated from Brookville High School in 1951.

In 1952, Captain Fox joined the United States Air Force to begin a career full of accomplishments. In 1954, he married his childhood sweetheart, Phyllis Swartz at the Metamora Methodist Church.

The couple traveled during Captain Fox’s career to San Antonio, Germany, Utah, Japan and the Philippines. In 1965, at 31 years old, Captain Fox was serving in Vietnam when he was killed. For his bravery, Captain Fox was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Bronze Star and Vietnamese Military Merit Medal. He flew a total of 273 hours, 151 hours in combat missions. Phyllis returned to Brookville to raise their five children: Chris, Greg, Danny, Julie and Joni.

The Captain Charles N. Fox, USAF, Memorial Endowment is a fund for community grantmaking. After the fund reaches $5,000, every year the income will be granted to a non-profit cause in Franklin County. Thanks to a challenge from Lilly Endowment Inc., every dollar added to this fund will be matched dollar for dollar until December 31.
