Doug Stirn Memorial Scholarship
William Douglas Stirn graduated from Brookville High School in 1966. He was a member of the undefeated football team of 1965. After graduation, Doug was hired at Sperry Rubber and Plastics. He became a medic in the army during the Vietnam War when his draft number was called. When he returned from his army service duties, he returned to his place of employment as a supervisor.
In his late 30's, Doug was diagnosed with diabetes beginning his struggle to fight a new war. In February of 1990 he was in a serious accident and was told his kidney's were beginning to fail. In June 1996 he was put on dialysis, while continuing to work his job. In January of 1998 the burden of dialysis an working became to much and he was placed on total disability. He continued his dialysis, but the diabetes was corrupting other body parts. His eyes were affected and he underwent multiple surgeries. On May 17, 2001, at the age of 53, Doug passed away. Doug was married to Rosemary Stirn for 20 years. According to Rosemary, Doug was the life of the party and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed rabbit hunting, swimming, traveling, horses and his family. He was always willing to help out if he believed he could. If Doug called you his friend, you were a friend for life.
The Doug Stirn Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 by Rosemary Stirn. The award provides a scholarship for students graduating from Franklin County High School who are in need of financial assistance. Primary consideration is given to students who plan to pursue a medical profession.
